International Limousin Congress 2016 – Opening Ceremony A spectacular flag-bearing ceremony was the curtain-raiser for the eagerly anticipated International Limousin Congress 2016. Each country with visiting delegates nominated a representative to carry their nation’s flag. This ceremony took place in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone on Saturday the 20th August. Paul Sykes, Breed Secretary of the Irish Limousin Cattle Society got proceedings underway for this the 22nd Congress. Paul called on Aled Jones, President of the International Limousin Congress to address the packed auditorium. Speaking at his last congress as president Aled shed some light on his time in the role. He emphasised how the bonds between the Limousin societies were strong. However, he explained that the bond between the “Keltic brotherhood” is a special one -that between the Welsh and the Irish is strongest and felt Ireland hosting the Congress was very similar to having it back home in Wales. Aled “commanded” all delegates to “renew old friendships – start new ones and talk Limousin”. Next speaker was the current President of the ILCS Dan O’Mahony. Dan spoke on the role the Limousin breed has in the Irish beef market. Since their introduction to Ireland, the breed has grown from strength to strength, it has taken the lead position in many areas. Limousin is Irelands premier choice suckler cow, Limousin is also the number 1 AI sire in the beef herd, number 1 beef sire and Continental bull of choice for the Dairy herd. This year’s congress has a vast and varied itinerary – the committee have worked tirelessly to ensure that all delegates will leave Ireland with lasting memories of a most enjoyable week in the Emerald isle. The itinerary includes farm visits, tourist attractions, sightseeing, a cruise on the river Shannon, the National Limousin show and an Elite sale. |
